The Tingler (1959)
Wise Rating 70%
Review Date: 2017
Project this movie on a screen, turn out the lights and let the terror unfold—that’s the only way to enjoy this crazy movie. A noble doctor (Vincent Price playing a good guy for once), his viciously mean wife, a romantic interest couple, a mute woman and a very nasty yard-long centipede who squeezes the life out of its victims. Not much plot, but a lot of fun IF you’re watching it projected on a screen in a dark room. It was designed for movie-theater audience participation. Director William Castle always had a gimmick for his movies, and this one had “Percepto”—the theater chairs were rigged to deliver slight shocks at key points in the movie. If you know of an inexpensive way to duplicate the “Percepto” effect at home without electrocuting my guests, please e-mail me at editor@wisefilmchoices.com.
Extra:
- I actually give this move a split rating, because I think the experience varies based on how you watch it. I would give it 60% if you saw it on a regular TV, and 80% if you saw it on a home theater projector or an actual movie theater. So for the purposes of giving it a single Wise Rating, I rounded it out to 70%.
