The Man from Nowhere (2010)

Wise Rating  45%
Review Date: 2017

Boilerplate South Korean action movie about an enigmatic pawnbroker with uber fighting skills who tries to rescue a little girl from a drug-dealing, organ-harvesting mafia. Not a very terrible movie, but nothing going for it either—it follows the action flick template almost to the letter. This movie seems to be a part of an earlier generation of South Korean action films (like “The Suspect,” another forgettable) in which filmmakers from that country were still coming to grips with the genre—action scenes are poorly choreographed and very confusing to follow, characters are somewhat cartoonish, and scripts don’t have much thought put into them. Recent Korean movies from the past three years or so have come a long way (like “Chronicles of Evil”), implementing intelligent storylines, quality actors and good action choreography. Skip this one and watch “Chronicles” instead.

Extra:

  • There is one cool shot in which the camera follows the main character as he smashes through a window and lands two stories below. How did the cameraperson land on his or her two feet, holding a movie camera?  But the 7-second shot doesn’t make it worthwhile to watch the movie.
