Let us once again recite Hobbit Trilogy Rule #1 (first expressed in my review of the Hobbit I): Don’t compare this to the “Lord of the Rings” movie trilogy, and don’t compare this to “The Hobbit” novel. If you take this movie on its own terms, you’ll find it highly entertaining and engaging. The Hobbit trilogy ends with the good guys battling everybody while dealing with the mental deterioration of their main leader, dwarf prince Thorn. An excellent fantasy war movie with an ending that was spectacular but surprisingly unemotional in the theatrical version. This was the only installment that I saw in the theater, with 3D and a high frame rate that made this movie feel more like a live theatrical presentation than film; it was an approach that I found neither better nor worse than the standard film experience—just different.
