The weakest of Christopher Nolan’s Batman trilogy, “The Dark Knight Rises” shows Batman/Bruce Wayne returning to crime-fighting in order to confront Bane, a brawny masked villain who is destabilizing Gotham. This one really doesn’t have much going for it except the Batman persona and some spectacle. The story strays too far from the comic-book Bane, who was addicted to a drug that transformed his body into a monstrous figure. This movie’s Bane looks like little more than a glorified wrestler, making it hard to believe that this villain could cause that much damage to Batman. The great actor Tom Hardy plays Bane, but he’s not able to do much behind the mask except to affect a sensitive voice that’s somewhat atypical for a brutal bad guy. There’s one great sequence, with a wounded Bruce Wayne trying to escape a pit where he’s imprisoned with others, but nothing more.
