Escape from Pretoria (2020)

Review Date: 2021

Concept: A pair of white political activities attempt a prison escape in apartheid South Africa. Based on a true story.
-
- Effective prison escape thriller mixed with the historical context of the struggle against apartheid.
- Daniel Radcliffe gives a particularly compelling performance as the mastermind of the escape attempt, making me forget the Harry Potter association.
- The movie also gives a great feel of apartheid’s oppressive nature, bringing attention those who risked and lost their lives to fight against it.
- Great use of the sound field. In other words, the movie made excellent use of directional sound. In one particularly suspenseful scene, I could hear the steps of the guard walking behind, above, and around me. It’s always nice to hear a movie take advantage of the side and rear speakers.
- Viewed on an Optoma HD28DSE projector, 92” screen, Showtime/Prime Chanel on Roku. Looked good on the projector.
- Not for kids.
